You’ve probably already heard about the Somali Pirates who went aboard a cargo ship that was flying the American flag and now is holding the captain hostage in a small boat. Obama just got back from his “rainbow tour” apologizing to the world for our significance and the affect that we have had for peace in the world. North Korea at the hand of Kim Jong il, taunted Obama with a missile launch of unknown cargo just after Obama declared his desire for nuclear arms reductions. Now we have some pirates who thought that it would be a good idea to try their hands at a ship that not only had an American citizens but also one that flew the American Flag.
Obama hasn’t even been in the White House for 100 days and he is being taunted. Taunts in themselves may not be harmful but what those taunts lead to is quite frightening. I remember hearing stories about passengers watching middle eastern passengers taunting and not listening to flight attendants during flights before 9/11. I don’t know how true this is but it is something that would be reasonable. If you were going to plan to hijack a plane then you would have to see what your boundaries were. Who would just take a guess and hop on a plane? You would want to see how far you could go with your”disobedience.” They soon found out that American flight attendants are not used to demanding people to do anything. In itself, these acts are benign but what it leads to. Those passengers who taunted those flight attendants then went to bigger and better things.
Obama needs to tell the world that America will not tolerate actions against its citizens. But I don’t think that he will do this. He will most likely pawn off his responsibility to the UN or finally do something after American uproar for his silence and say that a plan was in place all along but did not want to tip off the pirates. I was really glad to hear that Obama visited the soliders in Baghdad. However, I am disappointed that Obama has choosen to espouse the foreign policy that says that the individual, in this case a country, should not take responsibility for the success and protection of his/her interests.
