Why is it that I am treated like a criminal when I did nothing wrong? Oh, I know that there are somethings that we are unknowingly responsible for because of neglect or short sightedness but I don’t think it would apply here. I understand the idea that although I am free, I am forced to give someone restitution if I cause them harm. This makes since sense I am responsible for the consequences of my actions. HOWEVER, I don’t understand what I did to those people who cannot pay their mortgages. LET’S SEE:
- I don’t remember stealing any of their money or defacing their property.
- I didn’t kidnap anyone and hold them hostage in their home (you know it gets quite expensive when the SWAT teams start raiding a house and throw flash grenades everywhere).
- I don’t think that I caused any bodily or mental harm to anyone concerning their home.
So why am I forced to pay for someone else’s bad decisions? I thought it worked the other way around. It’s one thing to work hard for an employer and get some income in return. It is quite another to work for someone else (that you don’t know) and get nothing in return (unless you count the satisfaction that someone came out better with their bad decisions than you did with your good and responsible decisions).
So I ask, “what did I do that I am forced to pay restitution?”
