Ronald Reagan and Socialized Medicine

Within the past few weeks you have probably heard the audio of Ronald Regan speaking about the history and problems with socialized medicine were American to accept it. I tried to find the text but had no luck with that. If you know where I can get one then please let me know. One point that got my attention was the one about the loss of freedom that the Doctors would have within a Universal Health Care system. I’ll give you his point and then write my thoughts about it.

Doctors would not have the freedom to choose where they would like to live or where they could move to for their practice.

  • Under socialized medicine the medical field would become similar to the failing educational system.
  • Millions of Dollars would have to be spent to create the infrastructure with no clear benefit to the American Citizen.
  • Since this would be a compulsory system those citizens who do not want this insurance, they are going to be forced to pay for it even if they don’t participate in it.
  • Those who have middle class incomes will be forced to pay for the insurance for those who can afford to pay for their own private insurance.
  • Why would someone who has enough money to buy their own insurance not take it. As a result, those doctors who provide medical care outside of the socialized network will suffer.
  • The Federal Government will force those who desire private insurance to pay more for that insurance. In short, the Federal Government will strong arm its citizens to participate in a system that will take their money and their right to choose what is best for them.
  • Since Doctors will be taken out of the private sector there will no longer be a need for competition between the doctors. Competition breeds innovation and in the case for the service industry, outstanding customer service.
  • The patient would not have the right or would have a very difficult time in finding better doctors outside of their area. If a patient does not feel comfortable with a particular doctor that patient will not be able to find a new doctor as quickly as they do today. It will not matter if the patient has enough money to buy the services of a better doctor. That patient will have to request this change from someone who is not familiar with that patient and will also not be a doctor.

The thought of socialized medicine is great in theory but can not be applied to a country as large in size and population as the United States. This is the rub of capitalism. The balance between the rights of the people to make their own choices and suffer the consequences of their own personal or family decisions and  a country where its citizens work for the governement and it is the government that decides how that money will be used for the preservation of that government and not what is in the best interests of its citzens. I think I would rather be a citizen of the former.

What are your thoughts?
